Shower Door or Curtain?

We have noticed the growing trend in bathroom remodels of replacing a shower/tub combo with a tile shower. However, that might not suit your needs, budget or space. With a combined shower and bath, you have the option of either a shower door or shower curtain enclosure. Which one should you choose for your bathroom remodel? It may boil down to personal preference or budget. Below are some pros and cons to both shower doors and shower curtains.

Shower Door

  • Full enclosure, no water escaping
  • More expensive to purchase & install
  • Likely to coordinate with any style
  • Some options with glass pattern, texture, color
  • Space can appear larger
  • Less privacy
  • Susceptible to hard water stains & soap scum

Shower Curtain

  • Many designs & styles to choose from
  • Easy to change/update
  • Economical
  • Can attract mold & mildew, but fairly east to clean or replace
  • Accessibility for kids
  • Can make bathroom feel smaller
  • Custom rods available to match fixtures

Tiled Showers

Over time, a bathroom can look dated or no longer suit your current needs. This is why a bathroom remodel is one of our most popular remodeling projects. We're noticing a growing trend when it comes to bathrooms, that is, opting for a tiled shower instead of tub/shower combo. A tiled shower is great for adding your own personal touch. There are so many options such as...

Type: Ceramic, porcelain, travertine or glass

Size: 4x4, 3x6, 6x6, 12x12, 13x13 or 13x18

Shape: Square or rectangle

Color: Neutral or color

Floor: mosaic -- 1x1, 2x2 or pebble

Decorative Accent: Nice way to add color or use a different type of tile

Design Elements: Built-in storage, small bench

Tiling the walls up to the ceiling is wise as it prevents issues with water/moisture. Similarly if the bathroom has a lower ceiling, we recommend tiling the ceiling. Cleaning the shower is easy because we use Power Grout, which is stain resistant. You can also customize your tiled shower with multiple shower heads, grab bars or rainshower showerhead. Pair the tiled shower with a glass door and the shower really becomes a focal point of the bathroom. Below are a few of our tiled shower projects.

Aging-In-Place Design Ideas

"Someone's sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago." -- Warren Buffett

It is never too early to think and plan for the future! While you may not be at the point in your life where you need a walker to move about your home...you may need one someday! Designing your home remodel with this in mind, will help enable you to age in your own space. Baby boomers especially should consider some of these aging-in-place home modification ideas:

1. Make doorways a minimum of 32 inches wide for easier maneuvering.

2. A curbless tiled shower with bench and grab bars, making getting in and out of the shower easy & safe!

3. Toilet with higher seat height and grab bars.

4. Single handle faucets are easier to grab and adjust.

5. Hardwood floors versus carpet throughout most of the house.

6. A seated work space in the kitchen, so you don't have to always stand while prepping meals.

7. Side by side refrigerators tend to be easier to open.

8. Countertop or drawer model microwave instead of an over-the-oven to avoid lifting things above your head.

9. Brighter lights and LOTS of them!

10. Outlets located higher up -- less bending down.

11. Walkways and hallways 48 inches wide for easy maneuvering

12. No step entry into your home.

Kitchen Layouts & Floor Plans

One of the very first steps in the kitchen planning process is determining the layout. A kitchen layout is a blueprint for how your kitchen will look and function!  The work triangle serves as the basis on which all kitchen layouts are designed.  It is the imaginary line drawn from each of the main work stations in your kitchen -- the sink, refrigerator and cooktop.  When it is planned properly, food preparation is a breeze.  Check out these kitchen layout options...

What is the Kitchen Work Triangle?

When designing your kitchen, it is important to keep in mind the work triangle – the imaginary line between the sink, refrigerator and cooktop.

The concept of the kitchen work triangle was developed in the 1940's with the goal of maximizing efficiency and creating a user-friendly space.  A lot has changed since the 40's -- kitchens now often need to accommodate two cooks and other activities.  As a result, a double triangle or "zones" have emerged.  The prep, cooking and cleaning zones are still the main areas.  However, the optional supplementary zones help create a kitchen that fits your lifestyle.  Here are some ideas:

  • Baking zone - space for rolling out dough, cabinets to store the appropriate supplies
  • Beverage or bar area with stemware & compact beverage center for entertaining
  • Second sink adds convenience and another prep station
  • Spice or wine rack or other specialty storage
  • Desk or homework zone - for multi-tasking or helping the kids with their school work
  • Communication center - look up recipes, catch the news/weather or charge your cell phone
  • Rolling cart can serve as a prep station in smaller kitchens
  • Pull out trash center in cleaning zone
  • An island is a great element that is useful in housing multiple zones

Red, White & Blue Home Decor

We love everything about the 4th of July -- the fireworks, parades, BBQs, waving Old Glory...what can we say, we are proud to Americans! We aren't even afraid to admit we get a little choked up singing Lee Greenwood's, "God Bless the USA" -- how can you not? We especially love the shout out to Minnesota and our lakes! :) It is easy to capture the spirit of the holiday by incorporating red, white and blue into your home decor.  Check out these lovely patriotic rooms...
